Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
